Pompey’s 200m Invitational creating quite a buzz

The chance to run with a three-time Olympian and Commonwealth gold and silver medallist is an opportunity that nearly every local female sprinter is looking to capitalise on, but there are only seven other lanes on a track.

Guyana’s National 400m record holder Aliann Pompey’s participation in the President’s/ Jefford Track and Field Classic has invoked a overwhelming attraction among female sprinters to compete in the Women’s International 200m at the meet this Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Complex ground.

According to organisers, the33-year-old Pompey has agreed to compete in the women’s invitational 200m, although she is a more accomplished 400m athlete. Pompey’s 400m personal record is 50.71 seconds (national record) which she recorded at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin.

Local females at their best are about six to eight seconds off that time, so organisers felt that it would make the event more interesting if she competed in the200m. Pompey holds a personal record of 23.33s in the 200m, and locally based sprinters are in the 24 to 26 second range.
